Tensions flared in the Haitian music scene as Maestro Ritchie of Klass responded to recent remarks made by Arly Larivière, the leader of Nu Look, during a performance in Montréal. In that event, Larivière had pointedly criticized Klass, stating, “I see those guys are just playing kindergarten games. We, on the other hand, came to play real Compas.”

The controversy escalated during Klass’s latest performance at La Renaissance hotel in the Dominican Republic for the celebration of Saint Altagracia Day. It was here that Klass unveiled their new slogan “Eya! Eya!”, which was warmly received by fans and is expected to feature prominently on their upcoming 2023 album. This development seemed to provoke Larivière, leading to his comments, which did not sit well with Maestro Ritchie.

In a sharp rebuttal during a performance on February 3, Maestro Ritchie hit back, stating his disinterest in engaging in disputes, particularly not with Nu Look, which he feels holds a power that Klass does not possess. Ritchie elaborated, suggesting that if Klass were to replicate certain actions of Nu Look, such as mishandling band members or under-staffing major concerts, it could potentially lead to the band’s downfall.

Furthermore, Ritchie expressed his respect for Larivière’s talents but advised him to focus on his own internal band issues, subtly hinting at recent troubles within Nu Look. This includes the incident involving Alix Nozil, the former drummer of Nu Look, who left the band after alleging that Larivière had physically assaulted him—an accusation Larivière promised to address in a forthcoming video.

The feud has sparked speculations about the future interactions between Klass and Nu Look. With both bands being major players in the Compas scene, their public disputes have raised concerns over whether fans will see the two share a stage again, especially after their last confrontation at Amazoura where Larivière declared himself “King Arly.”

As the situation unfolds, the Haitian music community watches closely, hoping that the rivalry does not diminish the chances of future collaborations between these two prominent bands.
