It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ms. Mirlouse Sylfrard, a remarkable woman and true heroine of the Ouanaminthe Canal project. The canal, built in 2024 between Haiti and the Dominican Republic along the Massacre River, had stirred significant tension between the nations. Yet, Ms. Sylfrard stood unwavering, contributing daily to the construction and showing unparalleled dedication to the project.

Ms. Sylfrard distinguished herself through her courage, commitment, and tireless efforts to defend the interests of her community. She became a symbol of resilience for the people of northeastern Haiti, where the canal was a crucial lifeline for agriculture.

Tragically, Ms. Sylfrard’s health began to decline after she experienced foot swelling and other troubling symptoms. Despite receiving care from her mother and doctors, her condition worsened, leading to her untimely death. Although it is suspected that her symptoms may have been linked to internal bleeding, no official cause of death has been confirmed.

Her passing leaves an irreplaceable void—not only for her family and loved ones but also for everyone who had the honor of witnessing her dedication to improving the lives of those around her. In this difficult time, we offer our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who are grieving her loss.

May Ms. Mirlouse Sylfrard’s memory live on through the hope and determination she instilled in the hearts of many Haitians. Her legacy will continue to inspire, and her contributions to the Ouanaminthe Canal will never be forgotten.

May her soul rest in peace.
