Rap icon and member of the popular 90s Haitian rap group King Posse, Black Alex has died. Black Alex died on Friday 13th, 2015, just two weeks after being admitted to l’Hôpital de la Communauté Haïtienne. He was 39 years old.

Born on October 16, 1976, the charismatic rapper, Alex Jamecy Pierre was one of the best-known artists belonging to the rap Kreyol genre in Haiti. With his distinct and raspy voice, Black Alex along with his group mates controlled the rap Kreyol market in the 90s circa with hits like Lokal, Diana, Cool Non and many other.

Back in April 2006, the rapper was attacked by a bunch of goons who then robbed him of his diamond chain, a gift he received from a fellow rapper, Wyclef Jean. Black Alex was rushed to General Hospital in Port Au Prince and later transferred to a hospital in Cuba to undergo surgery to remove a bullet that was lodged within inches of his heart. Black Alex later released a single on Wyclef’s record label Sak Pase Records, titled Yo Tire Sou Black, featuring Jamaica’s own, Elephant Man. The song was a prelude to his full album that was supposed to be released on the same label but the project never materialized.

Toward the end of last year it was reported that he died after checking into a hospital for pneumonia, doctors confirmed he was alive but gave him only days to live. He not lived made it to the New Year, he went to complete the video to King Posse’s carnival video. But it was evident that the star wasn’t in good health when as he appeared very frail in the video.  He went on to give several interviews in the weeks to follow and later converted to Protestantism in church Shalom Tabernacle of Glory.

“I am deeply saddened by the departure of Jamecy ‘Black Alex’ Pierre. My sympathies to his family and to the Haitian music community “expressed Stéphanie Ballmir Villedrouin, the Minister of Tourism. The president, Michel Martelly also expressed his sympathy via his Twitter page. No word as to when the star will be buried but it’s been rumored the government will take charge of the funeral arrangements. Black Alex leaves behind a daughter.
