In a plot twist straight out of a sitcom and a dash of Fast & the Frustrated, a Minnesota couple found themselves facing federal charges after doing what no one expected: accidentally kidnapping a federal agent. Yes, really.
It all began when federal immigration agents showed up to investigate Oluwadamilola Bamigboye, a Nigerian national who had allegedly overstayed his student visa. Now, you’d think things would go the usual route: knock on the window, papers please, cuffs, and done.
Not this time.
According to the report, agents approached Bamigboye’s SUV, but instead of stepping out like a gentleman, he pulled a reverse Uno card and hopped in the back seat. His partner, Rekeya Frazier, was already in the driver’s seat. An agent tried to stop them and got inside the vehicle.
Big mistake.
What the couple did next could only be described as “DIY deportation defense.” Frazier hit the gas, speeding off with a Homeland Security agent still inside the car. That’s right. The agent never got out. The agent, just trying to do his job, now found himself in the world’s most awkward Uber ride.
The federal agent reportedly identified himself (probably with increasing volume and concern), but the couple kept driving. Because, apparently, when you’re panicking over immigration, kidnapping a government officer just seems like the natural next step.
After what must have been the most tense “where are we going” car ride of his career, the agent was finally dropped off at the New Hope Police Department, like a package with no tracking number. No tip. No five-star rating. Just: “Here’s your Fed back.”
Plot twist: the agent was never physically restrained, never threatened. He just couldn’t get out. So now, authorities are saying the couple “interfered with a federal agent,” which is the polite legal way of saying “you drove off with a government employee like it was a BOGO deal.”
Both Bamigboye and Frazier were promptly arrested and are now facing federal charges. Meanwhile, somewhere in Minnesota, there’s probably a very confused Homeland Security agent telling his coworkers, “I was literally kidnapped while trying to detain the guy.”
Moral of the story: if you’re overstaying your visa, don’t drive off with a federal agent in the back seat. Immigration might not forgive you, but comedy writers everywhere will thank you.
