Haitian Music Mourns the Loss of Legendary Percussionist Serge “Sergo” Laguerre

The Haitian music world is mourning the loss of Serge “Sergo” Laguerre, a master percussionist who dedicated his life to enriching Haitian culture through the art of music. Beyond his work with these bands, Laguerre’s talent was sought by numerous artists, reflecting his ability to adapt seamlessly to various musical styles and genres.

One of the highlights of his career was his time with the band Strings, known for its innovative blend of Haitian folk music with Flamenco, Afro-Haitian, Afro-Cuban, and Salsa influences. In 2005, Strings performed at the Reichhold Center for the Arts, a performance that highlighted Laguerre’s instrumental brilliance and his role in bringing Haitian music to international audiences. Whether in intimate venues or on grand stages, Laguerre’s rhythms were a celebration of Haitian culture and a testament to his passion for his craft.

Throughout his life, Laguerre was more than just a musician; he was a cultural ambassador and an inspiration to countless artists.
