Raised in a religious family, Jean Mary CLERMANSO logically made his musical debut, especially vocals, in a church by offering a gospel atmosphere. At the same time, he seized every opportunity that presented itself to listen to Compas, through the program “Le Petit Bal du Samedi Soir”. Deciding to get into music more seriously, he regularly used his cousin’s guitar to soak up the first chords. Of course, his parents did not take a positive view. Moreover, they came to tear him away from his first performance he was giving in Pemel, near Fond des Nègres with a local group. This was not enough to discourage him. This is how he took advantage of Alix Michel’s program, “Concours des

Petits Chanteurs ”to take off by temporarily leaving his birthplace Fond des Nègres to go to the capital he did not yet know very well.

He goes there without the knowledge of his parents. After some setbacks specific to urban life, he ended up participating in the competition by performing Magnum Band songs on stage with Dadou Pasquet and the other members of the group. Competition in which the young DJUMAY is the winner. He returns home, accompanied by his protectors from Port-au-Prince, including host Alix Michel. He was the pride of his city. From then on, he received his parents’ blessing and fully wore his nickname DJUMAY which was given to him by his girlfriend Mamay from the Salvation Army school they attended together. After winning the “Concours des Petits Singers ”, to continue to evolve musically, the artist had no other choice than to settle in Port-au-Prince. Which he did, while continuing his studies. His first meeting was with Djarly from the group “TIZ” whose musicians welcomed him like a brother. Then, the guys from the Sakad Mizik group from Pétion Ville called on him. He accepts with the approval of the musicians of TIZ.

During a performance with Sakad, he was noticed, at the Café des Arts, by Ben Constant of the Tokay group who invited the group to Crazy Max by Paul Villefranche (Telemax). Following this program and professional remarks made by Raoul Denis Jr, boss of Télémax, the main singer of Sakad gets angry and decides to make life hard for DJUMAY and all those who see him as singing talents. Several musicians from Sakad including DJUMAY create, with the support of Ben Constant, a new group called BINGO. DJUMAY assists the other singer of the group Wilka Eliassaint. Thanks to his services within the BINGO group, DJUMAY is approached by the guys from Back Up. He is invited to participate in a private hearing attended by numerous musicians, journalists and animators. DJUMAY passes his audition and becomes singer of the group BACK UP.With Réginald Cangé, DJUMAY is selected to participate in a national tour organized by Jeff Wainwright with artists from Zouk including Léila Chicot, Jacky Rapon, Edith Lefel, Thierry Cham, Jocelyn Deloumeaux, Sonia Dersion, Léa Galva, etc.

When Gracia returned to Haiti, there was talk of joining the group alongside DJUMAY, but finally decided to create his own Mass Konpa formation, by hiring three musicians from Back Up. Mass Konpa therefore became Back Up’s main competitor. Jensen of Phantoms calls him from New York, following the recommendations of Théo Jadotte, to replace King Kino who had just left the group. He sends him the entire repertoire of the group that DJUMAY hastens to learn with Theo’s help. While he is focusing on the repertoire of Phantoms while waiting for the administrative procedures to take their course, DJUMAY receives a call from the managers of Steel Groove in Paris asking him to integrate their training. He decides to go where the documents are first ready. These were those from Paris. Living in Paris, DJUMAY spent two years with Steel Groove, which recorded two albums. It was following the release of the second CD that DJUMAY decided to leave the Parisian group for good to finally create his own group which he called, in December 2012, NEWS LA. In the meantime, he was approached by 509 following the departure of Kenny Desmangles to join Zenglen, by Richie to join the Klass group, etc. but this did not succeed for various reasons. DJUMAY likes to say that he is working with the essential goal of coloring the Compass more and bringing it to a more international level than it currently is. It is in this sense that he does not hesitate to repeat loud and clear that his models in PMH are King Kino, Ederse Stanis (Pipo) and Gracia Delva for his spectacular side. DJUMAY wants to set out to conquer distant horizons. Soon, the Compass will no longer have borders. It will reach heights not yet explored.
