“Legba anye wo / Nou pral pare solèy / Peyi a lwen Legba / Nou pral pare solèy” During the opening minute, over spirited Haitian drumming, Riva and backing singers take turn repeating those phrases. Other players — drums, bass, guitars — join in at around 1m10s to create a frenetic rhythm, while a soprano sax improvisation-like performance gives the piece a jazzy feel. I’ve come across many “Legba” tunes over the years; this one is a new acquaintance which will no doubt become a good friend. Danbala Wèdo | 2m43s “Danbala Wèdo se nou menm o / Ayida Wèdo…
Port-au-Prince (Haiti): Voters in Haiti go to the polls on Sunday with ballot papers crammed with 54 candidates seeking to become the next president of the hemisphere’s poorest country. The vote to succeed President Michel Martelly next February is being held in a climate of insecurity and a shrinking United Nations peacekeeping force, and coincides with legislative and municipal elections. The winner will most likely emerge from the top three candidates, led by Jude Clestin, a Swiss-educated mechanical engineer who headed a government construction agency and is running under the LAPEH Party (Alternative League for Progress and Emancipation of Haiti).…
An intense, Haitian presidential campaign, which started slowly, has finally ended, finishing on a climactic note days before Sunday’s vote thanks to last-hour assists from two presidents and a world hip-hop star. Both former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and Haiti-born rapper Wyclf Jean surprised potential voters Friday by taking to the streets of the country’s capital in favor of their presidential candidates. Not to be outdone, President Michel Martelly, who has been campaigning for weeks on behalf of his hand-picked successor, also took to the stage in the final hours of the campaign. Whether the appearances, which forced unsuspecting motorists to…
Ricot Amazan better known as Ti-Tanbou was born in Haiti on June 3rd. At an early age Ti-Tanbou fell in love with music. His parents discovered how passionate he was about the craft and being the only musician coming out of a religious family; they tried their best to discourage him from pursuing a career in popular music. After many efforts to deter him from pursing a career in music, his parents reluctantly gave in and allowed him to continue with the condition that he only plays music for church. Ti-Tanbou compromised and partook in his Baptist church band…
Five years after throwing his support behind Haitian President Michel Martelly, Haiti-born hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean arrived in Port-au-Prince Friday to close out the campaign with his new candidate. Earlier this week, Wyclef endorsed Jude Celestin for the Haitian presidency. He announced the news in a rap song that immediately triggered a rap war on the eve of Sunday’s highly-anticipated vote. The first responder was Martelly’s son and sometimes budding rapper, Olivier, who dropped his own song. Olivier Martelly then soon got a response from a local rap artist, Mono. “Apparently I hold some kind of weight,” Wyclef joked with…
International rap artist, Wyclef Jean, who supported Haiti’s current President, Michel Martelly at the 2010 Haiti election, has jumped ship and is now supporting new presidential candidate Jude Célestin for his 2016 presidential bid. Wyclef also released a song titled “Le a Rive Map, Vote Jude Célestin” on his birthday this past October 17, proclaiming why he’s supporting Jude Célestin. Days after Wyclef released his single; Olivier Martelly, the son of the current president released his on track titled “Neg Banann lan”, taking jabs at Wyclef and openly supporting his father’s protégé, Jovenel Moses. A Wyclef supporter jumped…
Growing up I remember at my family’s dining room table there were a lot of do’s and don’ts. 1-Wash your hands before you sit on the table. 2- Say Grace. 3- Keep your elbows off the table. 4- Use the proper utensils. 5- Don’t chew with your mouth open. 6- Do note stick your fork in the person next you food. 7- Excuse yourself before leaving the table. Today as the world gets more modern, eating at a family table is almost non-existent. On average a working family really doesn’t have much time to sit together and enjoy a meal.…
Black Audio Film’s final video-essay explored the Faustian drama of 26 year old Tupac Shakur, the charismatic hiphop MC and actor whose unsolved murder transformed a brief career into posthumous legend. Through Tupac, George fashions a fascinating and complex meditation on the legacies of revolutionary nationalism, the notion of destructive character and the intensity of a life lived as death wish.
Veronique Jeremie is official a Mrs!!! Just days ago the former Zin beauty posted pictures of her engagement to her church’s bishop and this morning social media woke up buzzing with follow up pictures of her actual wedding. We’re guessing the engagement photos were taken months prior but we’re very impress with the way she went about releasing them. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Ambroise. Very good looking couple.
