PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Government-backed candidate Jovenel Moise and former state construction chief Jude Celestin appear to be advancing to a runoff election for Haiti’s presidency, according to preliminary results announced Thursday. The much-anticipated results from the 54-candidate first-round presidential contest on Oct. 25 were issued by Pierre Louis Opont, the leader of the Provisional Electoral Council. Since no candidate won a majority in that ballot, the two top finishers are set to meet in a Dec. 27 runoff. Haitians will have to wait until Thursday to learn who won the country’s recent presidential elections or advanced into a Dec. 27 runoff. “Publication of the results have been postponed until [Thursday] to take into account all of the complaints that have been received,” Pierre-Louis Opont, the president of Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council, told the Miami Herald. Haitian investigators are looking into new allegations of child sex abuse against an American man who founded an orphanage for boys in Haiti’s capital decades ago and who successfully sued a Freeport, Maine, man for defamation this summer.
