July Top Headlines 509 announced their grand premiere making their comeback official. On July 17, 18 and 19th Montreal held a three day festival featuring some of the industry’s most prominent bands. Venus International Production announced the cancellation of its annual Labor Day Parade. The organizers stated the reason behind the cancellation was to regroup. The Haitian singer known as Beken, whose real name is Jean Prosper Dauphin, was rediscovered in 2010 amidst the rubble of earthquake-stricken Port-au-Prince. Photographer Simon Romero first heard a snippet of one of Beken’s songs through a car window and, despite not understanding the Kreyol lyrics, felt the artful melancholy perfectly captured the post-catastrophe mood. Romero eventually found Beken living in a camp for displaced persons in Pétionville’s Place Saint Pierre, enduring grief, shock, and severe deprivation like much of the city’s population.
