François Duvalier, also known as “Papa Doc,” was born on April 14, 1907, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and died there on April 21, 1971. He was president of Haiti for 14 years, marked by unprecedented duration and a regime of terror. Duvalier, a trained physician, initially worked in public health, notably leading an anti-yaws campaign. He rose to prominence through his support for President Dumarsais Estimé and eventually held the position of minister of public health and labor. After Estimé was overthrown in 1950, Duvalier opposed the new military junta and, by 1954, had become a significant opposition figure. He was…

When it comes to sad love songs, Arly Lariviere seems to have written the book on the topic. The Maestro wears many hats in the Haitian music industry, aside from leading one of the most popular bands in the industry; he’s also a producer, song writer, keyboard player, and singer. But his best attribute is his ability to touch the most delicate of love situations. His lyrics are so real and easy to relate to one, might think he either hid behind closed doors listening in and collecting relationship secrets or he’s just really unlucky in love, however, we doubt it’s completely the latter. Arly…

Sherlee Skai’s Toutouni (Stark Naked) album definitely lives up to its title. It’s the singer baring her soul, letting us into her world as a Caribbean woman coming of age. The title track has the singer delineating her life, her impulses, her errors, her struggles, some light piano humming in the background. “Some people think I’m arrogant/I act on y whims/Without a thought/Then later regret,” she sings in Haitian Creole. The lyrics are very honest to the point of sounding like a religious confession or a series of death bed revelations. “Ou Manke’m” (I Miss You) isn’t a love song…

Today marks a significant historical event in the Haitian diaspora: the April 20, 1990, march where over 150,000 Haitians crossed the Brooklyn Bridge into downtown Manhattan, sending shockwaves through the city and the U.S. political landscape. This large-scale mobilization not only overwhelmed the New York City police but also led to the shutdown of Wall Street and several businesses in lower Manhattan, highlighting the collective power and unity of the Haitian community. The catalyst for this massive demonstration was the Federal Drug Administration’s (FDA) controversial recommendation in February 1990 that Haitians be restricted from donating blood, branding them as a…
