Many Haitians gathered Tuesday at prayer services and private homes to mark the sixth anniversary of the country’s devastating earthquake and remember loved ones who died. The Haitian government has said more than 300,000 people died in the 2010 disaster, but the exact toll is unknown because there was no systematic effort to count bodies during the overwhelming days that followed the quake. Joseph Philistin brought his two sons to the grounds of the Sacred Heart Catholic church, one of thousands of buildings reduced to rubble when the magnitude-7.0 quake hit Port-au-Princeand surrounding areas. He came to mourn five relatives…

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, Gasman Pierre more commonly known as “Gazzman Couleur” was the charismatic Lead Singer of the popular Miami based band Nu Look. Campaigning for Haiti’s presidential runoff election kicked off Friday, though it appears there is only one candidate who will actively participate. Government-backed contender Jovenel Moise, a little-known agricultural entrepreneur who led a crowded field of 54 candidates with nearly 33 percent of the vote in the Oct. 25 first round, attracted roughly 1,500 people to his first rally Friday evening. Big speakers pumped out bass-heavy songs featuring his campaign moniker, “Neg Bannann” — Banana Man in Haitian Creole — and a group of women wore yellow banana costumes. But the campaign team of the second-place finisher, Jude Celestin, was quiet…

The emergence of Duckens Nazon (blue jersey) was key to Haiti’s success in 2015. (Photo: Mexsport) PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Haiti’s chances of earning a place in the 2016 Copa America Centenario were dented Tuesday, when the Fédération Haïtienne de Football announced that star forward Duckens Nazon will miss Friday’s play-in match against Trinidad & Tobago in Panama City, Panama. Since the encounter does not fall on an official FIFA date, the 21-year-old has not been released by his French club Stade Lavallois (Laval), which has a Ligue 2 game at Nancy, also on Friday. The Haitian singer known as Beken, whose real name is Jean Prosper Dauphin, was rediscovered in 2010 amidst the rubble of earthquake-stricken Port-au-Prince. Photographer Simon Romero first heard a snippet of one of Beken’s songs through a car window and, despite not understanding the Kreyol lyrics, felt the artful melancholy perfectly captured the post-catastrophe mood. Romero eventually found Beken living in a camp for displaced persons in Pétionville’s Place Saint Pierre, enduring grief, shock, and severe deprivation like much of the city’s population. Despite these hardships, Beken’s spirit and voice remained strong. When producers Chris Donohue and David Macias of…

Dear Haitian Movie Industry,  I just started watching Haitian movies and over the course of 1 year and about 54 movies in; I’ve really tried to find a movie that I can actually say was worthy of me watching and to my dismay I haven’t found the hit. I’m sure it’s cheaper to get your friends to play the roles, but having someone sound like they’re reading lines is…
