Medjy Toussaint is a multi-talented artist who has made his mark as a composer, performer, pianist, singer, and producer. Born and raised in Haiti, Medjy’s passion for music was evident from a young age. He completed his classical studies at the prestigious Saint Louis de Gonzague institution, before leaving his homeland to pursue further education in Canada. In Canada, Medjy graduated with degrees in sound engineering, administration, and finance, all of which helped lay the foundation for his music career.
Medjy’s early foray into the music world began with the band TNT. However, after the group disbanded, he quickly transitioned to a solo career. In 2012, while living in Montreal, Medjy formed a new group called “Enposib” with the help of Patrice Cavé and his close friend and guitarist, Nicolas Millet, also known as Nico. Nico became the lead singer of the group, and together, they created a dynamic musical collaboration. Enposib quickly gained recognition, particularly with hits such as “Bo’m sou 2 bò,” “Pa Tann,” and “On Ti Pa,” which were widely played on Haitian radio stations and resonated strongly with the public.
After a nine-year hiatus, Medjy returned to Haiti and the group made a grand re-entry with their first major release, Chay, which was unveiled in July 2016 at the Karibe Hotel. The album was a huge success and solidified Enposib’s position as a leading force in the Haitian music industry.
Enposib, known for its diverse blend of musical styles, including zouk and compas, continued to ride the wave of success. One of their most popular songs, Defo, released in 2018, showcased Medjy’s vocal talents and candidly addressed personal flaws, as reflected in the song’s memorable line, “Mw gen defo, I know” (“I have flaws, I know”).
Medjy’s journey in Montreal was marked by his dedication to creating music that resonates with both urban realities and Haitian cultural roots. Enposib was formed not just to make music but to connect with people on a deeper level, bringing back the friendly, festive, and community spirit of Haitian music. In an era where music downloading has made it difficult to draw crowds, Enposib remains committed to bridging that gap by offering music that speaks to the soul of their listeners.
As a composer and performer, Medjy and Enposib have built a strong following with hits like Bo’m sou 2 bò and Pa Tann, which have been played on stations like CIBL, CPAM, and Radio Centre-ville. Drawing inspiration from iconic Haitian bands like Tabou Combo, System Band, and Slai, Enposib creates a rich fusion of Haitian music, zouk, konpa, and popular global sounds. Their music, often composed in Haitian Creole, also includes reworked versions of Anglophone and Francophone classics, infusing them with the groove and emotion characteristic of African American music.
Medjy Toussaint’s journey is a testament to his talent, hard work, and dedication to advancing Haitian music. Through Enposib, he continues to create a space where music brings people together, inspires joy, and promotes the rich culture of Haiti. ~OpaMusic.com
