Raised in a family of musicians, Welmyr is the youngest of four siblings, who all grew up to be great professional musicians in their own rights. At the tender age of five, he started harvesting his knowledge of the piano with the well-respected Haitian music teacher, his mentor, Mr. Solon C. Verettes. For the next 15 years of his life, Welmyr trained rigorously to be a classical musician. Still in his teens, he regularly performed recitals at the “Institut Français d’Haiti” and the “Auditorium de la Sainte Trinité.”
When he later moved to the States, although he continued with his classical studies, he started experimenting with other musical genres. He showed a particularly great interest in Jazz, Gospel and Konpa music. He was greatly influenced by the following musicians: Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarett, Chick Korea, Gonzalo Rubalcalba, Eddy Prophet, Mushi Widmaier, Reginal Policard, Assel Jean-Pierre, et al. These Jazz, Gospel and Konpa greats helped him in his crusade to branch out and include these new musical forms in his repertoire.
While attending the engineering program at York College in New York, he found time to work with several Gospel choirs, Jazz ensembles and Konpa groups. His virtuosity was quickly recognized by many in the Haitian community of musicians and producers; he subsequently became one of the most sought-after piano/keyboard players in the Haitian market. He has either accompanied or recorded for the following groups or artists: Emeline Michel, Beethova Obas, Eric Virgal, Edith Lefel, Orlane, Lakol, Skah Shah, Tabou Combo, System Band, SuperStars, Phantoms and countless others.
These extracurricular activities did not deter him from what he considers one of his greatest accomplishments. In 1998, he received his bachelor degree in civil engineering at the City College of the City University of New York.
Today his activities are numerous. Besides being a board member of the Newark Community Concert Choir, he is one of the writers/producers for J.P. Sonics, a record label owned by the three Jean-Pierre brothers (Assel, Kinelly, and Welmyr). He is also pursuing a career in the field of computer sciences, and is of course with the New York All Stars.
