OpastaffBy OpastaffApril 1, 20022 Mins Read

Saturday, March 30, 2002 – The Haitian communities gathered at the Miami Arena to honor their own, at the sixth annual Haitian Music Entertainment wards.

As it gets bigger every year, and as Haitian music continues to grow and expend, the HME Awards show has become more important. Stars such as Utah Jazz center Olden Polynice and, the Jamie Fox show, as well as NYPD Blue star, Garcelle Beauvais are honored with guest of honor awards. Polynice received warm applause when he told the crowd “you can beat us. You can ship us back to Haiti. You can even say we started AIDS, but we’ll keep fighting. It is in our nature to be a proud people.”

Miami mayor, Manny Diaz attended the ceremony as well as many Haitian and African-American stars. Star Vanessa L. Williams, of Soul Food, was in attendance, along with comedian Mike Estime of the Cosby Show.

The night highlighted the diversity of, not only, Haitian music, but also the Haitian people. The communities of Miami and New York, and others, gathered and for the six year in a row, celebrate konpa music, which consist of Alan Cave, Tokay, Mizik Mizik and others. After many years of “putting us down,” we are beginning to stand tall and recognize our great achievements.
