Johnny Frantz Toussaint aka Ti Frè, the Lagacy!

OpastaffBy OpastaffMay 31, 20243 Mins Read

If the golden era of Konpa music is seen as a venerable institution of talent, Johnny Frantz Toussaint, known affectionately as TiFrè, stands out as a distinguished graduate, composer, and hitmaker of that epoch. Starting his illustrious career in the 1970s, TiFrè initially joined the ranks of the revamped Shleu-Shleu during the transformative era of mini-jazz in Haiti, which threatened to overshadow the big band style before its resurgence.

TiFrè’s journey began as a guitarist with the regrouped Shleu-Shleu, helmed by Dada Djakaman, following the departure of the original group members like Tony Moise. His tenure coincided with some of the most iconic musicians of the time, including Serge Rosenthal and George Loubert Chancy. The band’s success in Haiti laid a robust foundation for what was to become a significant musical evolution.

His relocation to the United States with his cousin Mario Mayala marked the beginning of a new chapter as they joined the reformed ShleuShleu, which evolved into the legendary Skahshah #1. This band solidified its place in the Haitian Music Industry (HMI) with TiFrè’s contributions significantly shaping its sound and success.

Beyond his musical prowess, TiFrè is academically accomplished, holding a bachelor’s degree in Theory and Composition from York College (CUNY) obtained in 1989, and an A.A.S. in Respiratory Therapy from BMCC (CUNY) in 1992. His career as a respiratory therapist spanned 22 years at Coney Island Hospital, from which he retired early in the year.

TiFrè’s dedication to both his craft and professional career sets a lofty standard for musicians aspiring to excel in multiple disciplines. His songwriting credits include hits across various albums that have resonated deeply within the Konpa community. Some of these hits include “Vinn Danse” from the “Guepe Pan’yol” album and “Manman” from the “Message” album, among others.

Now settled in Long Island with his wife, TiFrè remains active in the music scene, currently working on a self-released album to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Haiti’s earthquake. This project promises to feature tracks that highlight his enduring commitment to his roots and showcase his exceptional guitar skills.

Johnny Frantz Toussaint’s journey through the decades of Konpa music not only highlights his musical genius but also paints the portrait of a man who is as disciplined in life as he is in music. His legacy as one of the premier guitarists and songwriters in Konpa music is undeniable, and his impact will resonate for generations to come.
